5 Bad Habits that Can Damage Your Vehicle - 06/12/2018

5 Bad Habits that Can Damage Your Vehicle

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Summer in Michigan is full of fun events. Camping, water sports, road trips, you name it. However, all that heat and stale air can do quite a number on your car if you keep up certain bad habits (and let's face, we're guilty of all of them).

In order to protect your vehicle, Graff Mt. Pleasant is here with some bad habits that can reduce its performance.

5 Bad Habits that Can Damage Your Vehicle

    1. KEEPING YOUR FUEL TANK LOW

Gas prices are especially high during the summer months, and we've all been there where $10 worth is the best we can do at the time. However, trying to put a little extra in at the pump can save you the more expensive fate of replacing your fuel pump. Many fuel pumps stay cool by being submerged in the fuel tank. If you typically ride the gauge at a quarter tank or less, you risk speeding up wear and tear to your fuel pump.

5 Bad Habits that Can Damage Your Vehicle

    2. RESTING YOUR HAND ON THE SHIFTER

Driving a stick shift is great fun, and having one hand on the shifter and the other on the steering wheel seems like the most natural way to do it. Don't. When you leave your hand on the shifter, it puts added stress on your transmission's bushings and synchronizers, which can lead to premature wear. It's a lot safer to keep both hands on the wheel anyway.

5 Bad Habits that Can Damage Your Vehicle

    3. IGNORING YOUR WARNING LIGHTS

When your check engine, oil or tire pressure light comes on, it's easy to ignore it. "I can leave it for awhile," you might say to yourself, "I've never had any problems before!" Bad move, you. Your vehicle has a ton of sensors underneath all that metal, which are there to monitor the function and condition of different components. When there's a problem, those sensors will notify you on the dashboard, and you should listen. Granted in some cases it may be a false alarm, but bringing your car in for a service appointment with us to have it inspected is a lot cheaper than having to foot the bill for a replacement, not to mention a lot safer than having your engine blow up on the highway.

5 Bad Habits that Can Damage Your Vehicle

    4. SUDDENLY SHIFTING

When you've been driving for a long time, your operating skills become a lot more advanced and your movements more fluid. This is no more evident than in the way you shift gears, such as when you back out of a parking space then immediately shift into drive. It might seem harmless at the time, but sudden shift changes like that can do a lot of damage to your drivetrain. Instead, try to get in the habit of coming to a complete stop before shifting gears. It only costs you one more second and will help to spare you costly engine, transmission, and axle replacements.

5 Bad Habits that Can Damage Your Vehicle

    5. HARD STOPS AND EXCESSIVE BRAKING

While it's sometimes necessary to slam on the brakes in order to avoid a collision, you should not make a habit of it. On top of that, excessive use of your brakes, such as when you're following too close to the vehicle in front of you, is not good either. Both can accelerate wear and tear on your brake pads, which can then lead to brake replacements and, if left unchecked, brake reduction and even failure when you're on the road.

We're all guilty of these bad habits that can negatively affect your vehicle's performance, but the good news is all habits can be broken! Now that you know the damage you're causing your car when you do these things, you can work towards reducing and eventually eliminating them. While you're at it, why not schedule a service appointment with us to make sure everything is in tip-top shape?

    5 Famous Dads in History - 06/11/2018

    5 Famous Dads in History

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Dads are many things to us. They're our protectors, sound advice-givers, and source of face-palm worthy jokes. Dads are great, and many of them have helped to shape history and change the world in one way or another, and not just by killing the spider in the bathtub.

This Father's Day, we at Graff Mt. Pleasant would like to share with you some famous dads in history!

    5 Famous Dads in History

    1. WILLIAM JACKSON SMART

Kicking off our list is the dad who inspired Father's Day, William Jackson Smart, a veteran of the American Civil War and later a farmer and single dad of six. Following the death of his wife during childbirth, Smart took over raising all six of their kids by himself, never remarrying. After hearing church sermon regarding the newly established Mother's Day, his daughter Sonora felt that fathers deserved their own day of honor as well, and originally suggested Smart's birthday as the holiday on which all dads would be recognized.

    5 Famous Dads in History

    2. BARACK OBAMA

Next on our list of famous dads in history is our 44th president, Barack Obama. In addition to being the proud and lovably dorky father of two daughters, Barack made history in 2009 when he became the first African-American president of the United States. Widely regarded as the most progressive president since FDR, he continued to make history throughout his two terms in office by legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide. Obama also ordered the military operation that took down Osama bin-Laden, ending the nearly 10-year search for the orchestrator of the 9/11 attacks.

    5 Famous Dads in History

    3. JIM HENSON

Responsible for the show that would define the childhoods of several generations, Jim Henson was the proud father of five kids in addition to a legion of Muppets, most notably Kermit the Frog. While in college, Henson changed the television puppetry game by making it possible for the performer to work off-screen. He also believed that puppets should have "life and sensitivity", and thus began creating them from flexible, fabric-covered foam rubber as opposed to carved wood, which allowed them to express a wider array of emotions and become fully-realized beings rather than simply props.

    5 Famous Dads in History

    4. STEPHEN KING

Widely regarded as the "King of Horror" and author of more than 200 works of fiction, Stephen King is a father of three, with his two sons both being accomplished writers themselves. In addition to his blood-curdling titles including Carrie and The Shining, King also penned many other popular novels such as The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption, all of which have been adapted into award-winning films.

    5 Famous Dads in History

    5. BERRY GORDY

In addition to founding Motown Records and sparking a musical and cultural revolution, Berry Gordy is the father of eight children. Out of his Detroit-based recording studio Hitsville USA, Gordy shaped and launched the careers of many of history's most beloved musical acts including Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and the Supremes.

That was our list of 5 famous dads in history. This Father's Day, why not schedule a service appointment at Graff Mt. Pleasant and get Dad that oil change he's been talking about getting for the past four weeks? Until June 30th, we're giving them away for just $4.95!

2019 Silverado Leads Industry Innovation with Dynamic Fuel Management - 06/05/2018

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 will feature the most advanced gasoline V-8 engines in the brand's history: updated versions of their proven 5.3L and 6.2L V-8s with Dynamic Fuel Management. An industry-first, this innovative cylinder deactivation technology enables the engines to operate in 17 different cylinder patterns to optimize power delivery and efficiency.

“Chevrolet first introduced its Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation system in 2005, and Dynamic Fuel Management is a natural progression of the technology,” says Jordan Lee, Small Block chief engineer. “Dynamic Fuel Management enables only the cylinders needed to deliver the power you want, seamlessly delivering the best balance of power and fuel economy.”

Compared to the current Active Fuel Management, which alternates between eight and four-cylinder modes, Dynamic Fuel Management features 17 cylinder patterns, which mixes them constantly to optimize efficiency and power delivery at all speeds.

During an industry-standard test schedule, the 2019 Silverado 2WD featuring the 5.3L engine with Dynamic Fuel Management operated with fewer than eight active cylinders more than 60% of the time, which is about 9% more than a comparably equipped 2018 model with Active Fuel Management.

Dynamic Fuel Management utilizes an electromechanical system that deactivates and reactivates all 16 of the engine's hydraulic valve filters, controlling valve actuation. This system uses solenoids to deliver oil pressure to control ports in the lifters, which activate and deactivate the lifters' latching mechanisms. During deactivation of a cylinder, the two-piece lifters collapse on themselves to prevent valve opening. During reactivation, solenoids send an oil pressure signal to the control ports on the lifters and latching mechanisms to restore them to normal function, allowing the valves to open and close.

“The increased variability of Dynamic Fuel Management means the engine will operate more often with a reduced number of cylinders, which saves fuel across the board,” says Lee. “Better yet, the transitions are transparent, and because the system is torque-based, you’ve always got that satisfying feeling of power on demand that comes from Chevy’s Gen V Small Block V-8 engines.”

The 5.3L V-8 with Dynamic Fuel Management is SAE-certified at 355 horsepower and 383 lb. ft. of torque, and is matched with a Hydra-Matic eight-speed automatic transmission.

The 6.2L V-8 with Dynamic Fuel Management - the largest and most powerful gas V-8 in the segment - is SAE-certified at 420 horsepower and 460 lb. ft. of torque, and is matched with a Hydra-Matic 10-speed automatic transmission.

Both transmission feature significant enhancements designed to improve shift quality, as well as a new centrifugal pendulum absorber torque converter that reduces vibrations during cylinder deactivation to improve smoothness.

The new Dynamic Fuel Management engines also feature optional stop/start technology that helps to conserve fuel in stop-go traffic. The 5.3L engine comes standard in the LTZ and High Country models and is available on the LT, RST, and Trail Boss. The 6.2L engine is also available in the LZT and High Country.

The all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado hits showrooms this fall. EPA fuel economy ratings are not yet available and will be closer to launch.

We hope you're as excited as we are for the new 2019 Silverado! Featuring the enhanced V-8 engines with industry-first Dynamic Fuel Management. In the meantime, schedule a service appointment with us to make sure your vehicle is running at its best. Check out our financing department to prepare for the launch of the new 2019 Silverado!

National Safety Month: Chevrolet Teen Driver Technology - 06/04/2018

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Nothing is more important than the safety of your family. Many of us at Graff Mt. Pleasant are parents, and we know that one of the most pride-inducing and nerve-wracking stages of life is when your child gets behind the wheel for the first time. Fortunately, Chevrolet vehicles have some of the best safety technologies on the market, including one that's specifically designed for young drivers.

This National Safety Month, we'd like to share with you some information on Chevy Teen Driver Technology.

    A HANDS-ON TEACHING TOOL

Chevy Teen Driver technology offers a ton of safety features with new drivers in mind, such as automatically engaging active safety technologies like Side Blind Zone Alert, Forward Collision Alert, and Forward Automatic Braking. On top of that, the built-in "report card" tool tracks things like speeding and other information to help you identify potential problem areas and coach your teen in safe driving habits.

    AUDIO LIMIT

According to the CDC, about 93% of teen drivers play loud, distracting music when behind the wheel. Additionally, only 61% of high school students wear their seatbelt when driving with someone else. With Chevy Teen Driver technology, you can set a volume limit on your child's music and even mute audio until the driver and front passenger is buckled-up.

    SPEED LIMITER

Teens are more likely to underestimate or not recognize dangerous situations when driving, and one of the biggest problem areas is speeding. With Chevy Teen Driver technology, you can set a speed limit that caps your teen's vehicle speed at 85mph.

    LEADING THE COMPETITION

In order to encourage safe driving habits, Chevy is the only car company that offers a driver safety technology suite dedicated to teen drivers. On top of that, it is available on most models including:
At Graff Mt. Pleasant, our number one priority is the safety of your family behind the wheel. When you're in the market for an awesome and safe first car for your teen driver, pay us a visit! Our friendly and knowledgeable team of experts will not only help you find the perfect vehicle, but also work with you to hammer out a financing program that plays nicely with your budget. Even after you close the deal, our service department is here to help ensure that your teen's car is always running at it's best!

The 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 Offers Multiple Engine and Transmission Combos - 06/01/2018

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Variety. That's the focus of the upcoming 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500, which is estimated to hit showrooms sometime this fall. Featuring eight different trims and six engine/transmission combinations, there's a 2019 Silverado 1500 to perfectly fit for everyone's performance, efficiency, technology, and value needs.

"A major focus of the next-generation Silverado is expanding the range of choices," says Tim Asoklis, chief engineer for the 2019 Silverado 1500. "With all-new engines and a broader model range, there's a Silverado for everyone, whether you're buying your first pick-up or your tenth."

The 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 propulsion line-up includes:

    • Over half of the models will be equipped with the most advanced V8 engines in Chevy's history. Updated versions of Chevrolet's proven 5.3L and 6.2L engines with industry-first Dynamic Fuel Management featuring 17 different modes of cylinder deactivation.
    • An all-new, advanced 2.7L Turbo engine replaces the 4.3L V-6 as the standard on the high-volume Silverado LT and new Silverado RST. It expects to offer 22% more torque, greater fuel efficiency, and a stronger power to weight ratio than the current model.
    • Tried and true 4.3L V-6 and 5.3L V-8 engines deliver full-size truck capability and performance for the most affordable trucks in the Silverado lineup.
    • An all-new, Duramax 3.0L inline-six turbo diesel. ETA early 2019.

A SILVERADO - AND AN ENGINE - FOR EVERYONE

Each of the six engine/transmission combinations available in the 2019 Silverado 1500 is matched with an exterior design and interior features, giving each trim its own distinct personality. These are based on three customer profiles: High Value, High Volume, and High Feature.

High Value: If you're looking for full-size truck capability and the highest level of affordability, the Work Truck (WT), Custom and Custom Trail Boss trims offer two engine/transmission combos that could work for you:
    •  Standard: 4.3L V-6 with Active Fuel Management and a six-speed automatic transmission (SAE-certified at 285 hp/305 lb-ft.)
    • Available: 5.3L V-8 with Active Fuel Management and a six-speed automatic transmission (SAE-certified 355 hp/383 lb-ft.)
High Volume: If you're shopping for something that brings the best of all worlds, the LT, RST, and LT Trail Boss offer a fantastic balance of technology, efficiency, and performance:
    • Standard (LT and RST): All-new 2.7L Turbo with Active Fuel Management and stop/start technology paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission (SAE-certified at 285 hp/305 lb-ft.)
    • Standard (LT Trail Boss) and Available (LT and RST): An updated 5.3L V-8 with Dynamic Fuel Management and stop/start technology with an eight-speed automatic transmission (SAE-certified 355 hp/383 lb-ft.)
    • Available (LT and RST): The all-new Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel with stop/start technology paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. ETA early 2019.
High Feature: If you're in the market for a premium truck, the LTZ and High Country trims offer the highest levels of performance and technology you can get:
    • Standard: Updated 5.3L V-8 with Dynamic Fuel Management and stop/start technology paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission (SAE-certified 355hp/383 lb-ft.)
    • Available: Updated 6.2L V-8 with Dynamic Fuel Management and stop/start technology paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission (SAE-certified at 420 hp/460 lb-ft.)
    • Available: The all-new Duramax 3.0L inline-six Turbo-Diesel with stop/start technology paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. ETA early 2019.

    IMPROVED DRIVING EXPERIENCE

The performance of each engine/transmission combination available in the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 benefits from a truck that is lighter and more aerodynamic than the previous model.
With less weight and less wind resistance, we improved the driving dynamics without sacrificing fuel efficiency,” said Asoklis. “The next-gen Silverado is a bigger truck, but the chassis feels more responsive and acceleration is more pronounced. I would argue it’s the best-driving truck we have ever built.”
The 2019 Silverado is larger than its predecessor, including an up to 3.9-inch (100mm) longer wheelbase, but with an overall length that is only 1.6 inches (41mm) longer. This enables more cargo volume as well as more interior room for all cab lengths. Remarkably, it’s also much lighter, weighing up to 450 pounds (204 kg) less than the current Silverado when comparing crew cab V-8 models, due to extensive use of mixed materials and advanced manufacturing.
To improve the aerodynamic efficiency of the next-gen Silverado, the front grille features functional air curtains, similar to those we saw first on the sixth-generation Camaro, which help to reduce wind drag by routing air around the front wheel wells. The powerful side profile also enhances aerodynamics, with an integrated spoiler at the rear edge of the cab that directs air onto the contoured tailgate, reducing wind drag from the bed. Most models also feature active aero shutters integrated into the front grille that close to reduce wind drag and open to provide improved engine cooling when needed. These changes result in a 7% increase in aerodynamic efficiency for the 2019 Silverado 1500.

    BIG SHOES TO FILL

The new 2019 Silverado 1500, has the lofty task of improving upon the legacy of the Most Dependable, Longest Lasting full-size pickups on the road. To do so, the next-gen truck will go through more than 475,000 validation tests and reach a staggering seven million miles of real-world road testing before the first model is delivered to showrooms.
That includes several tests for the Silverado engines and transmissions that will simulate a range of customer needs:
    • Each type of engine was first subjected to a “torture test” in a dynamometer test cell, running for months nonstop to simulate a lifetime of maximum hot and cold cycles.
    • Each Silverado variant is certified to the SAE J2807 standard for towing and payload capacity. Certification requires a gauntlet of grueling tests such as the Davis Dam test, in which the truck must carry its maximum gross combined vehicle weight up a 7% grade in 110-degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celcius) heat, with no reduction in performance, including air-conditioning.
    • Chevrolet engineers prove every Silverado engine and transmission design for lubrication capability on tilt stands, originally developed for the Corvette, that tilt at an angle of up to 53 degrees and can simulate angles at a rate of up to 40 degrees a second — the equivalent of up to 1.4g.
The all-new 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 is expected to hit showrooms sometime this fall. There is no EPA fuel economy info just yet, so be sure to check back for updates! In the meantime, why not schedule a service appointment with us to make sure your current Silverado or other vehicle is running in optimal condition? We hope you're as excited as we are about the new 2019 Silverado 1500!

The Army Rangers are a Special Operations division of the military, and prospects must pass many grueling trials including the notoriously difficult Ranger School in order to prove that they have the endurance, stamina, intelligence, and mental toughness to join their prestigious ranks. Up until 2015, those ranks were exclusively comprised of men.

On April 20th of that year, Capt. Kristen Griest and Lt. Shaye Haver were two of 18 women to enter into the first gender-integrated Ranger School, and later that August would become the first female soldiers to graduate and be accepted into this elite corps. Since Capt. Griest and Lt. Haver shattered the Army's glass ceiling, 12 more women have graduated Ranger School as of 2018.

5 Important Women in US Military History

    2. GENERAL ANN D. DUNWOODY

General is the highest rank an individual can achieve in the Army, and as of 1981, the four-star grade is the highest achieved of that rank. As a senior commander of the branch, the responsibilities of an Army General include overseeing Central Command (CENTCOM) and policy-making.

In 2008, General Ann D. Dunwoody became the first woman to hold the rank and four-star grade and served in this capacity until 2012. When General Dunwoody joined the Army in 1974, women served in the Women's Army Corps (WAC), and things were far from equal. Much has changed since then, however, and General Dunwoody is a prime example, paving the way for other women in the military to achieve greatness previously reserved for men.

5 Important Women in US Military History

    3. CATHAY WILLIAMS

Following the American Civil War, the Buffalo Soldiers were the first African-American unit of the military sanctioned by Congress. Despite being stationed in one of the most inhospitable regions of the nation and subject to poor living conditions, the Buffalo Soldiers had the lowest desertion rate in the standing Army, taking their commitment to defending their land and people very seriously.

Back then, women were not allowed to serve in the military, and African-American women were especially barred from enlisting given the intense racism and misogyny of the time. Cathay Williams ignored this prejudice, disguising herself as a man and enlisting under the name "William Cathay", becoming the first documented African-American woman to serve in the military as one of the famed Buffalo Soldiers, holding her own alongside the men on the harsh frontier of the American Southwest for two years before she was discovered and discharged in 1868.

5 Important Women in US Military History

    4. COL. EILEEN COLLINS

Being a NASA astronaut takes crazy amounts of training, including conditioning the body to handle being shot into outer space and subsequently enter zero gravity, among other things. Being a shuttle commander, however, that takes nerve.

Following her graduation from Syracuse University in 1978, Col. Collins was one of four women chosen for Undergraduate Pilot Training at Vance Air Force Base, Oklahoma. While in the Air Force, she served as an instructor pilot at both Vance and the Air Force Academy flying the T-38 Talon, C-141 Starlifter, and T-41 Mescalero. In 1990, she was selected by NASA for astronaut training, and just nine years later became the first female commander of a US Spacecraft with Shuttle STS-93, deploying the Chandra X-ray Observatory which is responsible for the discovery of several black holes across the universe as well as imaging the never-before-seen remains of exploded stars.

5 Important Women in US Military History

    5. 2D LT. ELSIE S. OTT

Prior to World War II, wounded personnel were not evacuated from the battlefield and all medical care was provided on the spot. This was extremely dangerous to both the wounded and medics, as they were left completely exposed to enemy attacks, the risk of infection was high, and proper equipment was difficult to carry and resupply in the midst of the action. However with the advancement of aeronautics at the time, "air ambulances" became more tangible.

On January 17th, 1943, Second Lieutenant Elsie S. Ott was selected to serve as an in-flight nurse on the first-ever med-evac mission. Despite having only 24 hours notice and zero air-evacuation or pilot training, 2D Lt. Ott masterfully cared for five soldiers suffering from grave conditions ranging from paralysis to tuberculosis. She was instrumental in safely transporting them from India all the way to Washington D.C. During her flight, she took meticulous notes of things that could benefit future air evacuations, many of which are still in use today.

Following the incredible success of the mission, 2D Lt. Ott became the first woman to receive the US Air Medal, which is awarded to individuals who display acts of heroism or meritorious achievement while participating in an aerial flight.

Despite the military being a mostly male-dominated world, there have been several women throughout American history who have proven they can definitely hang with the men. From earning their place in the ranks of one of the most decorated Spec Ops divisions to changing military operation and policy for the better, female soldiers have and continue to close the gender gap in America. 5 Road Trip Tips For Your Summer Adventures - 05/18/2018

5 Road Trip Tips For Your Summer Adventures

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Summer is finally here in the Mitten State, and that means it's road trip season! There are plenty of adventures to be had on a road trip through Michigan, but there are a couple things you should know in order to ensure your travels are enjoyable as well as safe. Graff Mt. Pleasant is here with 5 helpful road trip tips to make your next excursion the absolute best!

5 Road Trip Tips For Your Summer Adventures

    1. GET SLEEP

The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration estimates that about 100,000 vehicular accidents are caused by driver fatigue each year, resulting in about 1,550 deaths, 71,000 injuries, and a whopping $12.5 billion in collision repairs.

Before heading out on a long drive, it is essential that you get enough sleep the night before, at least 8 hours according to the National Sleep Foundation. If you're traveling with other people of driving age who have their license, plan to switch out driving duties. If you're going it alone, work a hotel stop into your itinerary.

5 Road Trip Tips For Your Summer Adventures

    2. FUEL UP

It might seem like a no-brainer, but about 800,000 drivers run out of gas each year on the road due to overestimating how much fuel they have left in their tank. The good thing about road trips is you'll mostly be cruising highways, which eats up less gas. However, Graff Mt. Pleasant recommends you do some preliminary research such as:

    • How many miles will you be traveling? Most GPS services will tell you when you're planning your route. You should also look into how many gas stations are on the way, the more the better.
    • How's your vehicle's gas mileage? Gas mileage tells you how many miles you can travel before your car uses a gallon of gas, and you can easily look this up online or in your owner's manual. Additionally, it's good to know how many gallons your gas tank can hold, which can also be found using the aforementioned sources.
Most importantly, if your fuel light comes on, DO NOT be a hero. Otherwise, make sure you have either roadside assistance or a no-spill gas can on board so you can hoof it to the nearest gas station.

5 Road Trip Tips For Your Summer Adventures

    3. INSPECT YOUR VEHICLE

Before you head out on your road trip, make sure your car is running at its best. This not only saves you money on the costly repairs that can result but is also essential to your safety. Here's a checklist of things to inspect before a long drive. If you're uncomfortable performing the check yourself, feel free to schedule a service appointment with Graff Mt. Pleasant! Our friendly and knowledgeable service technicians will be happy to answer any questions and make sure your car can handle the trip!

5 Road Trip Tips For Your Summer Adventures

    4. CHEW GUM

During a long drive, chewing gum has actually been proven to increase circulation and improve alertness, which are both important things to have since you'll be sitting for long periods of time while piloting two tons of motorized metal.

5 Road Trip Tips For Your Summer Adventures

    5. HAVE SOME SOUND

A killer playlist is not only an essential part of the road trip experience, but it's also a good way to keep you alert while driving. Music helps to stimulate the brain and break up the monotony of driving, which in turns cuts down on fatigue and boredom. Audiobooks work too!

Summer is road trip season in Michigan, and we hope you've found these 5 tips helpful! From all of us at Graff Mt. Pleasant, we wish you safe and happy adventures! The Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund of Michigan, an all-volunteer group of private citizens, offers essential financial assistance to our state's veterans of the post-9/11 Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts and their families.

5 Moms Who Changed the World - 05/08/2018

5 Moms Who Changed the World

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Not all heroes wear capes, and the best examples of this are mothers. From day one (literally), our moms do so much for us. They're our caregivers, our protectors, and our biggest fans. While these amazing women change our individual lives in so many ways, there are several whose actions ended up changing the course of history, whether they intended to do so or even knew it or not. It's just what moms do.

In honor of Mother's Day and women everywhere, Graff Mt. Pleasant 5 moms who changed the world.

5 Moms Who Changed the World

    1. FEBB BURN

In August 1920, Febb Burn of Mouse Creek, Tennessee was a mother of four and manager of a farm. Harry Burn, a representative of the Tennessee General Assembly and her son, was about to vote on the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution. If passed, it would give every woman in the country the legal right to vote in political elections. If vetoed, as many other states had done already, it would be years before it would ever be brought up again. The vote from Tennessee would be the tie-breaker, so to speak.

Febb knew that a majority of the state's senators would vote in favor, but the decision in the House would be close, and that Harry could swing the vote and make history. She then sat her 24-year-old son down on her porch and passed him a sweet, motherly note telling him about goings-on at home, but also urging him to "be a good boy" and vote in favor of women's suffrage. When it came time to vote, with his mama's letter in his pocket, Harry Burns voted "aye" so quickly and unexpectedly that it shocked the legislature. The opposition was fierce, but Harry simply replied: "a mother's advice is always safest for a boy to follow, and my mother wanted me to vote for ratification".

5 Moms Who Changed the World

    2. VESTA STOUDT

During World War II, Vesta Stoudt was an ordinance plant worker in Chicago with two sons in the Navy, getting the job to help ease her worries about her boys while they were overseas. However, as she was inspecting and packaging a box of rifle grenade cartridges, she noticed a problem.

The cartridges were packaged in small, wax-coated boxes sealed with paper tape and a tab on the end. The idea was that the tab could be yanked back and open the box, but it often just tore off leaving the box still sealed. She then pictured hers and other mothers' sons dodging enemy fire while struggling to get the boxes open with a knife or their teeth. Fueled by her protective mama bear instincts, she designed an alternative to the paper tape in the form of durable, waterproof, cloth-based tape which could tear easily and give field operators split-second access to their cartridges.

Back then, Vesta Stoudt was just a mom trying to make sure her sons were safe. Little did she know she would end up changing the world with her invention we now know as "duct tape".

5 Moms Who Changed the World

    3. ERIN BROCKOVICH

In 1993, Erin Brockovich was a single mother of three trying to make ends meet working as a legal clerk at a private law firm in Thousand Oaks, California. Despite her lack of formal education in the law, she was instrumental in building a case and winning a lawsuit against the Pacific Gas & Electric Company, who was knowingly responsible for the contamination the water supply of the small, Southern California town of Hinkley with hexavalent chromium, which was proven to have caused serious, chronic health issues in the unsuspecting residents, including the children. It remains the largest medical settlement lawsuit in history.

Today, Brockovich continues her career as a legal clerk participating in several other anti-pollution cases and is an environmental activist. Her battle against PG&E was adapted into an eponymously-titled film starring Julia Roberts, which was nominated for several Academy Awards including Best Picture. Back then, she was a mom who saw her own kids in those of Hinkley. Mom claws: engaged.

5 Moms Who Changed the World

    4. J.K. ROWLING

While in the process of penning the best-selling book series of all time, J.K. Rowling was a single mother and survivor of domestic abuse. In the early to mid-1990s, she wrote the first four books of Harry Potter between Scotland, London, and Portugal writing in many cafes with her baby daughter in toe, all while battling severe clinical depression, living on state benefits, and escaping an unhealthy marriage.

Since then, Rowling's billion-dollar empire of magic has produced seven books and movies with more on the way, video games, endless merchandise, and even a theme park! Harry Potter defined a generation of kids who grew up in tandem with the Boy Who Lived, now adults who still wear their Hogwarts house colors with pride over two decades later.

Rowling serves as the president of Gingerbread, an organization that works with single parents and their children to help them find resources and programs for success and support. "I am prouder of my years as a single mother more than any other part of my life", she says.

5 Moms Who Changed the World

    5. MARY KAY ASH

As a 45-year-old single mother of three in 1963, Mary Kay Ash launched her namesake cosmetics company that would give countless women the opportunity to work as sales consultants on their own time, being their own bosses, and using a business model that puts faith and family first. Mary Kay was also an advocate of female domestic abuse and cancer survivors and established the Mary Kay Foundation which has donated thousands of dollars for these causes.

This Mother's Day, we at Graff Mt. Pleasant encourage you to the take the time to learn about these 5 moms who changed the world. We also would ask that you make sure to thank your own mom and any other mom you meet for everything that they do, and the impact they have on our lives.

National Pet Month: 5 Travel Tips for Dog Owners - 05/04/2018

National Pet Month: 5 Travel Tips for Dog Owners

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- For many people, dogs are members of the family. As such, they'll get to tag along on all of the fun family vacations you have planned this summer! Though sometimes, our furry friends can get just a little too excited about all the awesome adventures they'll be going on with you, or they may get a little freaked out by being inside of a moving vehicle. Regardless of the issue, there's always a solution.

Ringing in National Pet Month, Graff Mt. Pleasant is here with 5 travel tips for dog owners.

National Pet Month: 5 Travel Tips for Dog Owners

    1. BURN EXCESS ENERGY

The most important thing you can do before piling your pooch in the car with the rest of the kids is to give him a good dose of physical activity to burn off energy prior to getting on the road. Playing a couple rounds of fetch will make your dog more inclined to rest, thus making the journey a lot smoother and more relaxing for everyone. You can repeat this process over the course of your trip when making a rest stop. Just hook up the leash and do a couple laps in a safe and open area.

National Pet Month: 5 Travel Tips for Dog Owners

    2. FOOD AND WATER

Unexpected delays are a part of traveling, which is why you should always be prepared with extra food and water if you've brought your dog along. There are tons of food and water containers for dogs that are specifically designed for travel, and can thus be packed away and transported easily.

National Pet Month: 5 Travel Tips for Dog Owners

    3. BE VIGILANT

Even if your dog is highly car-trained, it's always a good idea to take precautions just in case. For instance, it's a fact that dogs love open windows. However, there's always the risk that their super-sensitive noses will pick up a particularly interesting smell, and they'll jump right out of the car. Be aware of your dog's size and crack the window accordingly.

In addition to sensitive smell sense, dogs also have a crazy sense of hearing well-above human levels. That being said, unfamiliar sounds can cause them to retreat to their main source of comfort: you. Which can be very dangerous if you're driving. If you don't feel comfortable crating your dog up for the drive, invest in a "dog hammock" for your back seat. These not only prevent them from falling to the floor should you have to make a hard stop, but also make it harder for them to hop up front and cause a distraction.

National Pet Month: 5 Travel Tips for Dog Owners

    4. START THEM YOUNG

The best way to get a dog used to anything is to start when they're a puppy, and that includes traveling. Car-training can even be accomplished with simple trips like running errands. This is also a good time to establish rules and boundaries to keep both you and your pup safe on your adventures.

National Pet Month: 5 Travel Tips for Dog Owners

    5. KEEP THE ENERGY POSITIVE

Dogs operate primarily on instinct and thus are highly affected by body language, vocal tones, and emotional vibes. On top of that, as the leader of their pack, they look to you for direction. If you make it seem like something is wrong, your dog will become anxious. That's why it's important to keep the energy positive when traveling with them. Give them frequent notes of affirmation like "You're doing such a great job!" or "That's my good boy/girl!" being sure to use a positive but not excited tone of voice. This will help keep them calm on long drives and prevent any stress that may cause them to put you or themselves in danger.

In honor of National Pet Month and preparation for driving season, those were 5 travel tips for dog owners. Graff Mt. Pleasant wishes you and your pooch safe, healthy, and most importantly fun adventures this summer! Before you hit the road, ensure that your car is running at its best by scheduling a service appointment with us! If you schedule online, you'll receive 10% off no matter what kind of service you need! Happy trails!

5 Delicious Dishes for Cinco de Mayo - 04/25/2018

5 Delicious Dishes for Cinco de Mayo

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- Picture it: May 5th, 1862. Mexico. The Count de Lorencez leads a force of 8,000 French soldiers under orders from Napoleon III to occupy the city of Puebla, strategically situated between the capital of Mexico City and the country's main Atlantic port, Veracruz. At the time, the French Army was the best in the world. Well-equipped, highly trained, and undefeated for nearly half a century. Much to Lorencez's chagrin, he greatly underestimated the tenacity and strength of the significantly less equipped, less trained, and considerably outnumbered Mexican army led by General Ignacio Zaragoza who sent the French packing and prevented them from reaching the capital.

This victory over the invading French was inspirational to wartime Mexico and helped establish a sense of national unity and patriotism. It also sent a message to the rest of the world that the nation was not to be underestimated, despite not being as advanced in military and infrastructure at the time.

Today, Cinco de Mayo continues to be ceremoniously commemorated in Mexico. However, in the United States, it has become an all-out celebration of Mexican culture as a whole including music, art, films, and dance.

Although for many people, one particular thing comes to mind: the tasty, tasty food.

National Car Care Month: Spring for Inspection of Your Alignment and Suspension - 04/25/2018

National Car Care Month: Spring Inspection of Your Alignment and Suspension

MT. PLEASANT, Mich., -- With harsh winters and the drastic freeze/thaw cycles we experience heading into springtime, Michiganders are no strangers to terrible road conditions. Something we may not be aware of however is how much the alignment and suspension of our cars suffer when we drive over the many potholes that open up when the seasons change, and more importantly how to know when something's wrong and head in for service. Even if you don't suspect anything is amiss, spring is still a great time to schedule an inspection to make sure everything is well and good.

During National Car Care MonthGraff Mt. Pleasant wants to share with you the importance of having your alignment and suspension inspected this spring.

National Car Care Month: Spring for Inspection of Your Alignment and Suspension

    ALIGNMENT

Over time, things like potholes, dirt/uneven roads, and regular driving can take a toll on your vehicle's wheel alignment. However, road conditions get particularly nasty here during the winter here in Michigan, so it's extremely important that you check up on your alignment when Mother Nature finally decides to let up for the season.

When your wheels aren't properly aligned, your car has to work harder to move thus causing its performance to suffer. Spring alignment care is important because it maximizes tire life, performance, and fuel efficiency. Scheduling an alignment check at Graff Mt. Pleasant is super easy, and here are some signs for you to look out for in the meantime:
    • Your car pulls to one side
    • Vibrations in the steering wheel
    • Visible uneven tire tread wear
    • Squealing tires
    • Your steering wheel turns while traveling straight
Of course, even if you don't notice something wrong, springtime is the perfect time to head in for an alignment inspection just in case.

National Car Care Month: Spring for Inspection of Your Alignment and Suspension

    SUSPENSION

Your vehicle's suspension is responsible for controlling the bounce and impacts of certain rough road conditions and helps to keep the tires in contact with the road. It also helps to provide consistent handling, control rolling and swaying, encourages even tire and brake wear, and contributes to overall passenger comfort. Spring suspension care is especially important after experiencing treacherous road conditions during the winter (and let's be honest, even well into spring). You can easily schedule a suspension inspection at Graff Mt. Pleasant, should you notice any of the following warning signs:
    • Hard steering
    • Heavy tipping feeling when turning
    • Nose-dive stops
    • Rough ride
    • Excessive bounce
    • Low riding height of the vehicle
It's also good to just pop in for an inspection when the seasons change, to make sure everything is in top working condition.

We in the Mitten State know that terrible road conditions are a fact of life, and our alignment and suspension suffer a great deal as a result. As we head into spring, it's a good idea to have both inspected to make sure your vehicle is ready to hit the road, and certainly if you spot any of the warning signs we've listed. Spring Car Care is not only essential to protect your investment, but also ensure yours and your family's safety.

Their first serious collaboration was a 30 minute short entitled Within the Woods, which was more of a proof of concept used to attract investors to produce what would be the film that would launch both of their careers. The Evil Dead enjoys a place amongst the greatest horror movies of all time and spawned three more feature-length films including a remake, video games, comic books, and more recently a Starz television series intended as a sequel to the original trilogy.

With humble beginnings in the underground Detroit music scene, they rose to national then international fame six studio albums later. These days the Stripes are no longer making music together, with Meg choosing to leave the public eye. Eventually, he caught the ear of legendary hip-hop virtuoso Dr. Dre and went on to become one of the world's best-selling artists of all time. Eminem is praised for his technical and inventive lyrical ability, coupling a robust vocabulary with complex rhyme schemes that involve bending words so they rhyme, multisyllabic rhyming, multi-word bars, and use of melody. He even recently set the world record for Most Words in a Hit Single with "Rap God", which contains 1,560 words expertly laced through six minutes and four seconds, which averages out to be 4.28 words per second, spitting 97 of those words in one 15 second segment alone at "supersonic speed".

Oil and Important Fluids: Why and How to Check them for National Car Care Month - 04/16/2018

Oil and Important Fluids: Why and How to Check them for National Car Care Month

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- There are three important fluids that run through your vehicle and all of them serve specific purposes that affect function, performance, and efficiency. Making sure they're regularly checked, flushed, topped off, and changed is an essential part of seasonal maintenance that will improve the longevity and safety of your car. Oil, coolant, and washer fluid should be checked on a routine basis, and the start of spring is the perfect time to do so. If you're planning on spending a lot of time on the road come the warmer months, it's even more important to schedule a service appointment with us to stay safe and make sure your car is running at its best.

We at Hank Graff Mt. Pleasant are here to tell you about oil and important fluids, and why and how you should check them for National Car Care Month.

Oil and Important Fluids: Why and How to Check them for National Car Care Month

    WASHER FLUID

Washer fluid works together with your wiper blades to allow you clear visibility through your windshield. Some vehicles have built-in sensors that signal low washer fluid levels on the dashboard, while others do not. In any case, it's important to learn how to check it yourself so you always have a means of clearing your windshield of precipitation and debris while driving. The opening to your vehicle's washer fluid tank can be found under the hood, indicated by a picture of a windshield on the cap. When completely empty, most washer fluid reservoirs will take a whole gallon. No matter what the level, be sure to pour evenly and slowly.

If you go the route of doing it yourself, make sure you get a pre-diluted washer fluid that's rated for the temperatures you'll be driving in, otherwise you can risk it freezing in the tank. This information is always printed on the label. Though if you're unsure about going it alone, visit our service center and we'll gladly top it off for you!

Oil and Important Fluids: Why and How to Check them for National Car Care Month

    OIL CHANGE

Oil is an extremely important component of a well-running vehicle, as it lubricates the moving parts of your engine, helps to reduce heat caused by friction, keeps the engine clean, and protects it against wear. Routinely having your oil changed can help you avoid expensive damage in the long-run, as well as enhance the overall longevity of your car. Routine oil changes should be done every 3,000-5,000 miles, or sometimes longer depending on your driving habits and if your vehicle uses synthetic oil. If you're not sure, always consult your owner's manual.

However, if you have any upcoming road trips or other spring and summer activities that will put you on the road more often, stop in for an oil change to ensure your vehicle can handle it and that your engine runs smoothly.

Oil and Important Fluids: Why and How to Check them for National Car Care Month

    COOLANT

Coolant, also known as antifreeze, is responsible for controlling the temperature of various engine components. It serves a dual purpose of keeping the radiators in your vehicle from freezing or overheating throughout the year. We recommend replacing your coolant every two years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first. Different vehicles have different needs, however. So when in doubt, always check your owner's manual for your make and model's specs.

If you suspect that your engine may be overheating or detect a sweet smell while driving that might indicate a coolant leak, come visit us and our service experts can see what's going on, and top it off if needed. With warmer temperatures on the way, spring is the perfect time to check your coolant fluid checked to prevent overheating.

Now you know why it's important to check your oil and important fluids, and how to do it. All three fluids serve crucial purposes that are essential to a well-running vehicle and work together to ensure your safety as well as that of your investment. To perform their duties, however, they need your help. If you're uncomfortable checking or changing these fluids yourself, Graff Mt. Pleasant's friendly team of service specialists will gladly do it for you! Schedule an appointment today!

5 Fun Activities for a Rainy Day Indoors

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- April showers, right? Or in Michigan's case lately, April snow showers. Either way, outdoor activities aren't exactly exciting options during this extra turbulent time of the season, but that doesn't mean there isn't fun to be had right in the comfort of your own home. For kids and adults, here are 5 fun activities for a rainy day indoors.

5 Fun Activities for a Rainy Day Indoors

    1. GOOD OL' NETFLIX

It's rainy. It's snowy. It's cold. What a perfect time to forget how dismal it is outside and catch up on your favorite shows inside! Grab some snacks and drinks, plop on the couch, and call upon your good friend Netflix. Rainy days create the perfect atmosphere for a horror flick scare-a-thon, or maybe you'll finally binge every episode of that one series everyone's been borderline spoiling on Facebook. If you have kids, you can never go wrong with Disney, and most of the movies double as a fun sing-a-long!

5 Fun Activities for a Rainy Day Indoors

    2. INDOOR EXERCISE ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS

Kids have a ton of energy, and we all know a rainy day doesn't change that at all. Consider some of these fun and active to-dos for your cooped-up kiddos:

    • Balloon Ping-Pong: This one doubles as a creative activity. Get a paper plate and tape a popsicle stick to the back, then get some crayons and let your kid customize their ping-pong paddle. Lastly, blow up a balloon and go nuts!
    • Dance Party: Throw on some of your kids' favorite music and have a dance party. Mix it up: When the music stops, everyone has to freeze in place until it starts again. Or add a "follow the leader" aspect, switching up dance moves as you make your way around the house.
    • Indoor Hopscotch: No really, just hear us out. Get some painter's tape and create a hopscotch grid on your kitchen or dining room floor. The good thing about painter's tape is it'll come off easily when you're done and it won't ruin your floor.
    • Hallway Bowling: Fill up some of the plastic bottles from your recycle bin with water, set them up at the end of the hallway, and have at it with any ball you have.

5 Fun Activities for a Rainy Day Indoors

    3. HAVE A HOME SPA DAY

Turn a gloomy day into a relaxing one by just pampering yourself. Light some candles, burn some incense, draw yourself a hot bubble bath and kick back with your favorite music, a good book, or both. Be sure to add an exfoliating face mask to your experience, as those are super nice and relaxing as well.

5 Fun Activities for a Rainy Day Indoors

    4. GAMES THAT DON'T NEED ELECTRICITY

The downside of technology as a source of entertainment is if a storm knocks the power out, there goes your fun, and wireless devices only last so much longer before they must be charged. In the event of such an occurrence, here some fun games you can play on a rainy day indoors that don't require electricity.
    • Pictionary: Draw a thing! Guess the thing!
    • Shadow Puppet Theater: Prop up a flashlight to shine on a blank wall. Brainstorm a story and use your hands to make it come to life!
    • Board Games: The classic activity that never fails.
    • Improvised Poetry: One person says a line of poetry, and the next person must make up their own line that rhymes with it, and so on.

5 Fun Activities for a Rainy Day Indoors

    5. PLAN A VACATION

Why not beat the rainy day blues by planning a vacation? For real this time! Make a list of places you'd like to visit or ask your kids where they'd like to go. Research transportation, look at pictures read about fun stuff to do while you're there. And, while you're at it, schedule a service appointment with us to make sure your vehicle is at its best for this awesome road trip in the works.

Those are just 5 activities we recommend to spend a rainy day indoors. What do you like to do when the weather has you stuck inside? We at Graff Mt. Pleasant want to know! Your garage counts as "indoors" as well, why not also use the rainy day to rundown your Spring Car Care checklist? Have Your Belts and Hoses Inspected for National Car Care Month - 04/09/2018

Have Your Belts and Hoses Inspected for National Car Care Month

MT. PLEASANT, Mich.,---We at Hank Graff Mt. Pleasant are here to share with you why you should have your belts and hoses inspected for National Care Care Month. When it comes to keeping your vehicle running in good shape, your belts and hoses are some of the most important parts of your engine because they enable your car to run! Normal use will cause them to wear down over time, but are more susceptible to damage in extreme hot or cold weather. Hot weather can add heat on top of existing friction, which causes these parts to wear down a lot faster. while cold weather on the other hand can make them stiff and prone to cracking.

By following scheduled maintenance and having regular inspections completed, you can be sure that your belts and hoses are working properly. While they don't often require replacements, inspections can catch little issues before they become big problems. We've shared some tips below on the various kinds of belts and hoses that help your car run, as well as how to spot any signs of damage.

Have Your Belts and Hoses Inspected for National Car Care Month

    BELTS

Your engine's belts control things like your AC compressor, water pump, alternator, engine valve intake and exhaust, and power steering. A broken belt can completely disable your vehicle, and the changing temperatures that come with springtime can make them more prone to wear. Damaged, cracked, or frayed belts can still run but can cause even bigger issues like your engine overheating. While they don't often require replacements, it is important to get your belts inspected regularly.

There are two kinds of belts your engine uses: the timing belt and the accessory or serpentine belt.

Timing Belt: Also known as the Cam belt, the timing belt synchronizes the rotation of the camshaft and crankshaft. This helps the engine's valves open and close at the right times during the cylinders' intake and exhaust strokes. You should have your timing belt replaced every 60,000-100,000 miles or whenever your owner's manual tells you to do so, and here are a few signs to look out for that may indicate a replacement is in order:
    • Your engine "jumps" gears
    • Your vehicle is completely disabled
    • There are plastic pieces from the camshaft gears in your oil pan
    • There is loss of oil pressure (due to the camshaft pieces being in your oil)
    • You hear a squeaking noise from your timing cover
    • You hear rattling noises coming from your engine
    • You have trouble starting your vehicle
Accessory or Serpentine Belt: Most vehicles usually have one or two drive/accessory belts. Also known as the "serpentine" belt, the accessory belt gets its name from the snake-like motion it uses around the pulleys of the engine. Its job is to transport power to components like your power steering pump, AC compressor, alternator, and many others.

Water, dirt, oil leaks, and excessive heat can cause your serpentine belt to wear down very quickly. You should have it inspected every 10,000-20,000 miles, and replaced every 60,000-100,000 miles or whenever your owner's manual tells you to do so. Here are a few signs that your accessory belt might need replacing:
    • An overheating engine
    • A disabled vehicle
    • A loss of power steering
    • A squealing or high-pitched noise while accelerating

    HOSES

In the same way your circulatory system moves blood and oxygen around your body, your engine's hoses move fluids vital to your car's performance throughout its entire system. A cracked or damaged hose can lead to the leaking of these vital fluids, like coolant or brake fluid, and reduce the efficiency of your vehicle. There are several kinds of hoses inside your car:

Radiator Hoses: This hose moves coolant through your engine to regulate its temperature. Without it, your engine can overheat which can in turn case major internal damage and lead to costly repairs. Here a few indicators of a radiator hose leak:
      • Drop in coolant level
      • Smoke coming from your engine
      • Rising engine temperature
      • A bright pool of liquid underneath your vehicle
Fuel Line: The fuel line transports fuel from your fuel tank to the fuel pump, and are typically made out of reinforced rubber but can also be made out of plastic or metal. While they aren't usually a part of your vehicle's routine maintenance, it is extremely important to have them checked before the end of the fall or beginning of spring when temperatures are changing drastically. Here are some signs you may need to replace your fuel line:
      • Loss in fuel efficiency/gas tank emptying faster than normal
      • Puddles of gas underneath your vehicle
      • Smelling gasoline while driving
      • Hard starts
      • Your vehicle not starting at all
Brake Lines/Hoses: Brake lines and hoses are used to stop your vehicle when you depress the brake pedal. Some vehicles made of steel and some made of rubber, but rubber takes the majority for the flexibility it provides to your car's suspension when traveling on uneven surfaces. Here's how to tell if you have a broken brake line or hose:
      • Loss of braking ability
      • "Soft" brakes
Now that you know why, go forth and have your belts and hoses inspected for National Car Care Month! Take care of your car, and it will take care of you. Schedule an appointment with our friendly and knowledgable service team today, and we'll help you keep your vehicle running at its best this spring and get it ready for your summer adventures!

Clean out Your Closet with 3 Simple Spring Cleaning Steps - 04/04/2018

Clean out Your Closet with 3 Simple Spring Cleaning Steps

MT. PLEASANT, Mich.,––Give your closet the TLC it deserves this spring. There's no better feeling than having a clean, spacious, and organized wardrobe! People are creatures of habit, meaning we all tend to keep things in our possession longer than we probably should. If you have any sort of doubt about an item in your closet, chances are, it's time for it to go. Get rid of that old grey sweater and worn out pair of running shoes. It's time to clean out your closet with these 3 simple spring cleaning steps:

    Step 1: Purge

Clean out Your Closet with 3 Simple Spring Cleaning Steps

We know it can be hard to let go of items that once made you dazzle. However, sometimes, you just have to let go. Go through your closet and ask yourself these 7 questions:
    • Does this fit?
    • Have I worn this in the last 12 months?
    • Is it likely I will ever wear this again?
    • Is this currently in style, and/or does this still accurately represent my style?
    • If this is damaged in any way, will I actually make the effort to get this repaired?
    • If I was shopping right now, would I buy this?
    • Do I feel confident when I wear this?
If you answer a solid "no" to any of these questions, it's time to say goodbye. Another great way to decipher what items to keep is creating three different piles. One for "keep", another for "maybe", and the last one for "get rid of". This way you can sort through all your clothes and accessories and be able to distinguish what you actually want. Don't forget the 1-year rule! If you haven't worn it in a year, it's probably time to toss it out.

Step 2: Sell, Donate, or Throw Away

Clean out Your Closet with 3 Simple Spring Cleaning Steps

Once you've decided what items you're getting rid of, it's time to figure out what you want to do with them. You have many options to choose from: sell, donate, or throw away. Selling your unwanted clothes can be a hassle and very time-consuming, but it can definitely be worth it for some extra cash to have on hand. If you have some expensive pieces that hold some real value, list them on a resale site like eBay! Now, if you have items that are really worn out or have holes or stains on them, just toss those in the trash. Whatever you have left, bundle it together in a large trash bag or box, and set it aside to be donated. Drop it off at your local Salvation Army, Goodwill, or other nonprofit institution that collects used clothes.

    Step 3: Organize

Now that you've got the clothes, shoes, and accessories that you want to keep in your closet, it's time to do a little bit of reorganizing. There are three highly effective items to use for storage and organization: hangers, bins/totes, and hooks. Hangers keep the wrinkles out of your clothes and create a cleaner, less cluttered space. Bins/totes comes in all shapes and sizes. They are perfect for stacking on shelves and hiding items you don't typically use everyday. It's also a good idea to put seasonal clothes in boxes until you'll wear them again. Hooks are great for everyday jackets, belts, hats, scarves, purses, or even necklaces.

Once you've got all your handy storage supplies in order, you'll want to arrange your items in a helpful and easy way. Vacant floor space can be used for totes, bins, or even large bags. Put the clothes/shoes that you wear regularly within reach. Store seasonal bins/rarely used items up high or out of sight. Try organizing your clothing by different categories (i.e. dress pants, jeans, casual shirts, blouses, jackets, etc.). You can even sort items by color, too!

A lot of times we put spring cleaning aside because we either don't want to let go of certain items, or we don't want to take the time to do it. This spring, make the choice to clean out your closet with these 3 simple spring cleaning steps. Once you do, you'll feel accomplished, organized, and revived. It's a great feeling knowing that your space is clutter-free! Don't forget to clean out your car and perform routine maintenance for the spring season. Read our spring car care tips for information on tires, alignment and suspension, fluids, wiper blades, and spring cleaning. Make sure to schedule an appointment with our service team for any work and repairs your vehicle needs!

Ensure your car is ready to take on Michigan roads this spring season by getting it up to speed with this tire maintenance checklist for National Car Care Month:

    1. Perform Routine Tire Rotations

    • It is recommended that you rotate your vehicle's tires every 3,000-7,000 miles or every other oil change. Tires tend to wear unevenly, which is why it's important to rotate them to ensure they wear more evenly across all four of them. This will produce better handling overall. Bring your car into our service center for a tire rotation!

    2. Check Out Your Tire Tread
    • Your tire's tread is what allows you to grip the road, serving as a buffer between both surfaces that keeps you safe during various weather patterns. If your vehicle has low tire tread, you'll be put at a higher risk of hydroplaning or losing grip during rainy conditions this spring! It can also increase your stopping distance, making it more difficult to stop in an emergency situation. Check your tire's tread using the penny method or have our team of experts inspect them for you!

    3. Inspect Your Tire Pressure
    • The air pressure in your tires can become effected from various temperatures. It's critical that you maintain the recommended tire pressure at all times as it will improve your fuel economy, decrease risk for tire issues, and provide a much smoother ride as a whole. You can find the recommended PSI for your car's tires in the owner's manual. It's a good idea to check your air pressure in your tires every month or so. Our service team can fill up your tires if they are in need of some air!

    4. Change Your Tires
    • Have you taken off your winter tires yet? If not, it's time to do so. Winter tires are only meant to handle 45 degrees Fahrenheit and below. We recommend switching back to all-season tires. If you're in need of a new set, our service experts will be happy to get your vehicle into brand-new tires! We highly recommend replacing all four at the same time, allowing for even tread wear.

Staying up-to-date with tire maintenance will ensure their effectiveness when gripping the road and will help extend their life down the road. Spring weather tends to bring slippery road conditions, making it crucial that your vehicle is up to speed on spring car care! Use our tire maintenance checklist for National Car Care Month to make sure you've covered all the bases. Consult our tire care page for more tips on maintaining your car this season. Don't forget to schedule an appointment online with our service team for a tire rotation, new set of wheels, or any other maintenance needs you may have!

Chevy Partnered With Acclaimed Data Scientist to Create Cross Country Road Trip - 03/15/2018

MT. PLEASANT, Mich.,–– Have you ever wanted to take a road trip across the entire country? Now, you can. Chevy partnered with an acclaimed data scientist to create a cross country road trip for families heading on vacation this spring. Randy Olson developed a custom map using a specific algorithm that planned a route through all 48 contiguous states, stopping at some of America's favorite family destinations along the way.

A recent national survey held by Chevrolet found that spending time with family and exploring new places were U.S. parent's top two favorite parts about taking family road trips.

Chevy Partnered With Acclaimed Data Scientist to Create Cross Country Road Trip

This data-driven map includes stops at rip-roaring theme parks, national landmarks, and famous attractions all around the country. With less backtracking and less stress in mind, Olson designed this route in the most efficient approach. It was constructed in a way easiest for families to navigate. Get an interactive view of the map here.

If you were to take this daring journey around the states, you would spend a total of 214.56 hours behind the wheel and log 13,389 miles on the odometer, which does not include time or mileage for overnight breaks and any detours along the way.

"This map is designed so road trippers can start anywhere and drive as much or as little as they like," said Olson. "Across the U.S., people can create their perfect route, whether staying close to home or embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime 48-state journey."

Chevy Partnered With Acclaimed Data Scientist to Create Cross Country Road Trip

Keeping passengers entertained and connected on the go is important to Chevy. The in-vehicle tech, such as 4G LTE Wi-Fi, built-in navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, is offered in a majority of new vehicles such as the Chevy Traverse, Equinox, and Trax. Most new models come equipped with the latest and most advanced safety features that are ideal when logging hours behind the wheel. These include:

    • Surround Vision
    • Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert
    • Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
    • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
    • Rear Park Assist
    • Rear Seat Reminder

Chevy Partnered With Acclaimed Data Scientist to Create Cross Country Road Trip

Chevrolet has also earned numerous Dependability Awards by J.D. Power, including Most Dependable Compact SUV, Midsize SUV, Large Light Duty Pickup, and Midsize Car.

Looking for a shorter road trip? Olson also curated shorter routes for families looking to explore different ares of the country more in-depth. His routes include the Midwest, the Northeast, the West Coast, Texas, and Florida.

There's no need to map out your route this spring break season. Chevy partnered with an acclaimed data scientist to create a cross country road trip that the whole family will be sure to enjoy. Before you hit the road, it's important to make sure your vehicle is prepared to handle all conditions when logging hundreds of miles.
